Introduction

His setup is built around guitar and Farmer Footdrums, a combination that has taken him from busking on the streets of London to international tours and festival stages. In 2020, he released Live Busking at Camden Town Station, capturing some of those early performances.

Since then, Cole has taken the one-man format considerably further. His music appeared in Ted Lasso, while his first US tour became the subject of the 2024 documentary American Mileage. The film follows Cole travelling through the American South, exploring the musical influences behind his work and meeting musicians including Bobby Rush, R.L. Boyce and Jimmy “Duck” Holmes.

There is a natural connection between that journey and what comes next. Cole's forthcoming album, Lost In Creation, is less about abandoning the sound he has built his career around and more about seeing how far he can take it.

Lost In Creation

The album was recorded at Dean Street Studios in London, with one track recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales, and mastered at Abbey Road Studios.

Cole's guitar, vocals, bass, footdrums and percussion remain at the centre, while the record also brings in additional percussion, guest vocals, guitar and other instrumentation.

“This whole album has a different feel to my previous ones,” says Cole. “We started experimenting and painting around it with different vibes and sounds, guest vocalists and odd instruments, and then the tracks really came alive. That’s where the album title Lost In Creation comes from, we really got lost in it in a good way.”

Chasing Dreams

The first glimpse of that change came with ‘Chasing Dreams’, released on 18 September. The track sits on familiar blues-rock foundations, but its subject is quieter than its driving rhythm might suggest. Cole wrote it during a period when he had become consumed by the idea of trying to solve problems far beyond himself.

“The song is about a time when I was trying to solve all the problems of the world and taking them on and getting swallowed up by it,” Cole explains. “It’s about realising that the best thing we can actually do instead is be the best version of ourselves and through that we make the world a better place. So you chase your own dreams and I chase mine.”

The track was not necessarily destined to become such an important part of the record. Cole initially saw it as a strong demo, but it developed during the sessions into one of his favourite moments on the album.

Beyond the one-man setup

Cole has spent years developing his sound within the format he built for himself. The one-man setup places practical limitations around the music. Everything has to be performed by one person. Lost In Creation gives him the opportunity to keep that physical foundation while adding elements that aren't possible within the stripped-back live setup.

That doesn't mean the live sound has been left behind. Cole's current material still centres on the same combination of guitar and footdrums, while the new record expands the palette around it. The album draws on blues, rock and psychedelic influences, with richer textures and larger, more atmospheric arrangements than the stripped-back setup might suggest.

‘Chasing Dreams’ also introduces an idea that runs beyond the individual song. Cole says the album is ultimately about being able to step away from everything else for a while.

“I guess if there is a main theme on Lost In Creation that connects all the tunes,” Cole says, “it’s about escaping into music and having a breather for a moment.”

For an artist whose career began by putting his music directly in front of strangers on the streets of Camden, that feels like an appropriate place to arrive.

The setup has grown, the audience has grown and the recordings have become more expansive, but the basic idea remains the same: make something that gives people a reason to stop and listen.
