Death From Above 1979 are marking 25 years as a band with a new album that looks at the increasingly blurred line between private life and public exposure.

The Toronto duo have announced their fifth studio album, Private Lives, due 29 January 2027 via Last Gang/MNRK. Alongside the announcement, Jesse F. Keeler and Sebastien Grainger have officially released the album’s title track, accompanied by a video starring Danish actor Kim Bodnia and directed by Eva Michon.

The song takes aim at the pressure to turn increasingly personal parts of life into something for public consumption. For a band who have spent more than two decades navigating the attention that comes with making music, the subject gives the album’s title an immediate context.

Death From Above 1979 describe the track as “a ripping rock song with maniacal riffs”, while their description of the album points towards a continued focus on the physical impact of their music and what they call the “pure industrial magic of electricity”.

The new record arrives six years after 2021’s Is 4 Lovers. It follows a career that has already taken the duo through a split and reunion, with their debut album You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine released in 2004.

Keeler and Grainger originally formed Death From Above 1979 in Toronto in 2001. They split in 2006 before reuniting in 2011, subsequently releasing The Physical World in 2014, Outrage! Is Now in 2017 and Is 4 Lovers in 2021.

Private Lives will contain 10 tracks, including ‘Mystery’, which features Brazilian electro-rock band CSS.

The album announcement also comes with a new run of North American dates for 2027. The tour begins in February and continues into March, with Canadian and US shows scheduled across the run.

There are currently no UK dates included in the newly announced Private Lives tour.

For Death From Above 1979, Private Lives arrives at a significant point in the band’s history. Twenty-five years after they first formed, and six years after their last full-length record, the duo are returning with a record whose first statement is about keeping some things out of the public eye.
