Released via Concord, the 12-track album features the previously released title track, ‘Back To Me’, ‘Without You’ and ‘Vultures’, alongside seven other songs. The record was written entirely by frontman Steve Garrigan, marking the first time the band's album has been written solely by one member.

The album takes in some of the subjects that have shaped Garrigan's writing over the past few years, including relationships, loss, uncertainty and change. In discussing the record, he has said it became a way of making sense of an important period in his life, including getting married, dealing with loss and the decision to bring Kodaline to an end.

As a final album, We Were Only Young is a measured rather than dramatic goodbye. Kodaline stay close to the melodic, emotionally direct songwriting that has defined much of their work, with the stronger moments coming when the arrangements give the songs room to breathe rather than pushing too hard for a big emotional payoff. There are familiar touches throughout, and the album doesn't radically reinvent the band's sound, but that isn't necessarily what it is trying to do. Instead, it feels like a considered collection of songs that brings their story to a natural close.

The album's title track was released in April, followed by ‘Without You’, ‘Back To Me’ and ‘Vultures’ ahead of today's full release. ‘Vultures’, the most recent of the four, arrived in September and was accompanied by a video filmed during the band's farewell world tour.
